I’m FINished. Are you?

I don’t eat shark’s fin.

I haven’t been eating it for as long as I can remember. I’m not sure if I’ve even had it… But I know that if a bowl of shark’s fin soup is placed in front of me, I won’t touch it.

For the longest time, the reason I gave others for not consuming fins is because fins are obtained in a cruel manner. Fins are sliced off a live shark with a hot blade and the rest of the body (still breathing) is then thrown back into the sea, either for it to bleed to death or for other fishes to eat it alive.

About two months back, I got a call from Hossan (Shark Savers Singapore ambassador) and he asked me if I would be keen to help do PR for Shark Savers – pro bono. I’ve helped friends with some publicity work but I’ve never done it for a NGO and while I believe in the cause, I didn’t think my workload would allow me to work with this organisation in the most efficient manner.

I went for a Shark 101 and I was blown away with the facts. Did you know that only about five humans are killed by sharks each year? More people die from dog bits or even a vending machine falling on them. But, humans kill over 73 millions sharks each year. That’s just sad.

Another cool fact, sharks have been around longer than dinosaurs! They have existed for 450 million years and have survived five major mass extinctions – including the one that wiped out the dinosaurs.

So here I was, with a project I really wanted to be a part of and a group of people (my colleagues and bosses) that I had to convince that this would be a project really worth working on.

Cut the long story short, after a messaging session etc. we came up with the “I’m FINished” campaign that I feel awfully proud of. I’m FINished with fins. It’s edgy with a slight rebellious streak – perfect for our target audience (15-30ish).

My awesome team and I are FINished!

Everyone at Shark Savers is helping out because they believe in the cause. No one is paid for the work that they do and the response from everyone has been overwhelming. Behind the scenes, we’ve had Cathay Cineleisure Orchard come on board as the official venue sponsor, Gold 90.5FM as the official radio station, MediaCorp gave us bus stop space for our ads, @ccomplice offered their creative work etc.

Not forgetting all the various personalities that came onboard to support this cause. From Hossan Leong, to blogger Mr Miyagi, to supermodel Sheila Sim, to radio DJ Jean Danker, to female jazz band Tessera, to national fencer, Joan Ang. The list can go on and on and on but you get the gist. In case you’re wondering, all the beautiful photos are taken by famed underwater photographer Aaron Wong.

They're FINished too

Come this Tuesday (1 May), the world’s first ever SharkAid concert will take place from 5-8pm at Cineleisure (just outside World of Sports).

SharkAid is a public concert that will feature a star-studded cast of local and international artistes including Tessera, Sylvia Ratonel, Alicia Pan and Eli T coming together to raise awareness about shark conservation. Other than radio DJs including Ivy Tan and Yasminne Cheng, athletes such as Laurence (Captain of Singapore’s F1 power boat team), Arren Quek (National swimmer), Aaron Koh (wrestler) and Joan Ang (National fencer) will also be present. Hossan Leong, Shark Savers Singapore’s ambassador will be the host of the concert.

So, please come join and say “I’m FINished” with shark’s fin soup.

Spread the shark love and I hope to see you there. Come say hi!

Feelin Blue

I always say this but I’ll say it again - I’m terrible with goodbyes.

I don’t know how to say bye to someone close without feeling like the words won’t do justice to how much I’ll miss him/her. Last night, we had a farewell session for Petteri, my Finnair client, at M Hotel. Partners, people in the travel industry, agencies etc. were all present to say buh-bye to an awesome man. It was supposed to be a light-hearted event but I couldn’t help but feel horrible inside.

An editor who was present last night told me, “the relationship Finnair and your agency have is incredible. Agencies normally hate their clients but you guys love each other!”  Hehehe.. It’s true! We love hanging out together and we care for each other.. When Petteri goes back to Finland, he comes back with chocolates, gum and even plush toys for me! And of course it’s not one-way (I hope!)

I got Petteri two photo frames (with photos!) for his farewell gift. There was a short sentence behind each frame.. Should have taken photos of it but anyway.. One frame said “FOR WHEN THE BOSS IS AROUND” and the other said “FOR WHEN YOU’RE THE BOSS”. Not difficult to guess which photo had what…

Photo 2

We also went with flowers, chosen by yours truly! Sunflowers for the man that’s always cheery, wild flowers to show that I haven’t forgotten the wild (I meant Scandic) side to him and of course blue and white paper – Finnair’s corporate colours.

Love the flowers!

Not complete without naughty notes from the team

Here’s a photo of the team at Grayling with our favourite client! The reason why I’m smiling so happily is because I was being grumps and the cheeky man was tickling me from behind. Haha!

Three cheers for the P!

I will miss you!!! :(((((((

Anyway, there’s a story to the outfit above.. I met Lena the night before for dinner and coffee and she was dressed in the exact colours! Bright orange pants and a grey top. I should have taken a photo of her but she was being a grumpy monkey because of work and all. Sigh, don’t we have too much stress for our age?

Lena and I are gonna be bridesmaids for Tannia's wedding!!

It’s Friday and things are gonna be awesome!

Have a great weekend! xx

Dinner at Daikokuya

Met up with the POEPs (short for poly peeps) last night for dinner at Daikokuya. It’s funny how we always end up having Japanese. It’s time for change!

Located at a little corner in the basement of Paragon, Daikokuya is a ramen eatery that serves well, ramen, amongst other Japanese chow such as sashimi, tempuras and curry rice.

Ramen time!

As usual, we ate for an entire village but here are some photos of what we had..

Salmon Carpaccio

Unagi Chawanmushi.. They ran out of the normal

Tamago

And for my ramen of the night… The Sustamina (don’t ask me why) ramen (asked for mine without pork).. with loads of cabbage and beansprouts. Yum.. Laden with garlic, the broth was delicious but didn’t do too well for my breath

Sustamina Ramen

Our horrendous bill!

Food was pretty alright. Not outstanding but worthy of a meal after a hard day at work :)

Headed to Honeymoon Dessert after dinner to continue our yak session. Despite being full, I had BOTH the mango sago with beancurd AND the red bean with mini mochis and green tea icecream *satisfied grin* Makes me hungry just thinking of it!

Lots of yummy traditional dessert

After dessert, we decided we still had lots to catch up on so like nomads, we headed to Starbucks.

Us! Missing two..

Monkeys

We are very happy together! ♥

And as I sip on my new bought peppermint tea (you can get it from Cold Storage), let me share with you a funny encounter a couple of us had many years ago when we were just 18.

Sip sip sip

I only remember because Maddie brought it up yesterday and it made me laugh till I teared.

Years back, Mavis, Yasi, Maddie and I went to Bangkok. We were just 18. Young, ready to rule the world and READY TO CLUB. Away from home and our parents, we were so excited to check out the night scene in Bangkok. I can’t remember which club we went to now but this is what happened..

Bouncer: IDs please
Us: Shit, we didn’t bring it.. We left our passports in the hotel room
Bouncer: We only allow people 21yrs and above to enter
Us: BUT WE ARE!
Bouncer: Fine.. You *points to Mavis*, which year were you born in?
Mavis: 1984 (or some random year that made us YOUNGER than 21)
Bouncer: Hmm, are you lying to me?
Mavis: *stunned upon realising her error* HUH!!  *facing us* 他在讲什么?我不明白!!
Me: *trying soooo hard not to laugh* 他在问你,你几时生日!!!

In the end, we managed to get in.. But the bouncer told us if the police were to come raid the place, we had better escape from the back door.

Don’t you miss your younger days?

Unplanned Dinings

The weekend came and passed. Bummer. But it was good.

Attended cell group on Friday evening.. It was our first session but a thoroughly good one. Looking forward to more ♥

What was supposed to be a ‘filler’ dinner last Saturday – those in between appointments – turned out to be a nicer than normal (atas) dinner at DB Bistro. I have a lousy camera so the photos are pretty crap but the food was pretty awesome though I still prefer my steak from Bedrock.

DB’s famous for their Original db Burger (S$38) which is a sirloin burger filled with braised short ribs and foie gras. Filled meaning they shove the foie gras and short ribs into the meat patty.. I don’t take pork but I had a bite of the beef patty and it was yummy! I’m pretty sure there was a tinge of wasabi somewhere in the burger.. And personally, I would prefer mine without.

Unfocused photo of the db burger

I clearly didn’t take the photo above. It was taken by my dinner partner for the night. Here’s a photo from db’s website that will do 92387x more justice to the photo above.

Tadah!

I had the Steak Frites (S$49) which is well, a slab of steak..

Sirloin with a bucket of fries

As much as I’m trying to follow the blood type diet, I. ABSOLUTELY. CANNOT. RESIST. FRIES. And DB has some pretty solid frenchiefriezzz!

After hearing lots about the newly opened Menya Musashi ramen at Raffles City, I decided to give it a try. This was after I felt it was about time I had a salad to balance out my unhealthy diet for the weekend (see below).

Please applaud the lousy camera from my BB9900. Can’t wait for the iPhone5 to be out, grr..

Black Musashi Ramen

The broth of the ramen at Menya Musashi is much thicker than usual. It’s extremely flavourful but also feels a whole lot more sinful (leave your bowl untouched for a moment and you’ll soon see a layer of grease..). The noodles are also thicker and bouncier than your normal bowl of ramen. I googled and here’s why the broth is black – they fry/boil a whole lot of onions and garlic (together with pork bones) to achieve this.

I also tried their dry ramen, also known as Tsukemen. You are served two bowls – one with noodles, an egg, garnish etc. and the other with a rich soup/sauce. You dip your noodles into the black broth and eat it as you would with cold udon/ramen. The broth is much richer than the normal ramen as I guess you’re not meant to drink it but just dip your noodles in.

Overall, the food was delicious but the egg wasn’t as moist as I would have liked it to be and while flavourful, I don’t think I’ll be returning anytime soon. It’s just waaayy too sinful! I can do without all that collagen haha! To wash everything down and make myself feel better, I had a cup of tea at Cedele after I was done ;)

Oh yes, over the weekend, I also had chicken rice at Boon Tong Kee, sea salt gula melaka icecream with waffles at Creamier, yong tau fu, nuggets, more icecream and waffles, a tuna sandwich from Four Leaves etc.

I ♥ my food.

Happy week ahead y’all! xx

O+

Everyone wants to look good but we all know it’s FUCKIN hard to look like models. Forget about models, it’s hard just trying to tone up with all the good food that we’re spoilt with in Singapore.

I’ve never believed in diets.. Maybe I don’t have strong enough willpower or maybe I love my food too much but anorexia and me just don’t go.

That doesn’t mean that I don’t admire the bodies of hawt people.. On Pinterest, I have boards of hot bods amongst others haha! It’s depressing but it’s such pleasure for the eyes..

Hawt babe

Hawt dude.. I meant, cute doggie!

Ok, I think you get my point. It IS truly difficult to achieve a hot bod (that stays hot).

Recently, a friend told me he’s on the blood type diet and while I’ve heard quite a bit about it, I’ve never spent much time researching more into my blood group. In addition to assisting with weight loss, the blood type diet also promotes alertness and reduces sluggish-ness – a feeling I get a lot especially after lunch.

A bit of background on the blood type diet. It’s advocated by Dr Peter D’Adamo, a naturopathic doctor (so bear in mind he’s not a medical doctor). He studies blood types and suggests specially formulated diets and lifestyles for each indivuals’ blood type. You’ll see a lot of testimonials on how great his system is from his Facebook page.

Blood runs through our body so I’m pretty certain the the food we feed our system play a huge part in our well-being.

Here’s the research I’ve done.. I’m an O+ so for those of you who are of other blood groups, I’m sorry!

Characteristics

Type O blood is linked to the earliest human blood group. Also known as the hunters, Os thrive on intense physical exercise and have the ability to efficiently digest and metabolise protein/meat. Os are high in adrenaline, good in the metabolism process (a bit ironice since the primary function of the thyroid gland is to maintain metabolism) and have good immune systems. As such, it is highly recommended that Os hit the gym 3-4 time a week (eeks), engaging in cardio and/or aerobics. The more Os exercise, the better they react towards their emotions.

Downside, Os are more akin to suffer from ulcers and thyroid disorders. I’m a living, walking example as I suffer from (mild) thyroid issues.

Personality

Read somewhere that some companies in Japan actually assess/hire their interviewees/staff by their blood type! It is a widespread belief in Japan that blood types determine personalities for work, life and love. Basically, in Japan, your blood group says it all!

Os are known to be good leaders. They are extroverted, energetic and focused to the tasks they set their mind to. They are responsible, organised and logical. However, Os are also known to respond to stress with anger and impulsivity. In short, Os are tantrum throwers (something I know too well) :p

What to eat

Being ‘hunters’, Os should eat more lean meat (with the exception of pork. HA! Never eaten that all my life).. Think beef and chicken. Saltwater fish is great too (e.g. cod, snapper, mackerel etc.). Food like iodized salt, and vegetables high in vitamin K are said to help prevent the occurence of hypothyroidism. I’m only talking about hypo because I think that’s the more common thyroid problem. Os should eat fruits that are alkaline in nature e.g. berries and plums. Oh yes, seafood’s good too. Yes!

What not to eat

Because Os are high in adrenaline (basically, hyperactive), it is highly recommended to avoid caffeine (bye bye kopi!). Os are also bad with acidic fruits – think oranges, blackberries etc. Try to keep away from pasta (nooo way!), grains, dairy products (noooooo I love icecream), legumes (beans, soy nooooo I love tauhuay), alcohol and weirdly enough, shiitake mushrooms.

There you go! I’ll keep all of you posted on how my meals go but trust me, it’s gonna be hard. Then again, do everything in moderation and if the craving’s too strong and life throws you lemons, grab the tequila ;)

Have fun!

P.S. There’s no difference in an O, O- or O+ when it comes to the blood type diet
